Women’s brain is more sensitive to the action of a hormone that orchestrates the body’s response to stress, according to a new study in Philadelphia (USA) and published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. Men, however, neurons can adapt to resist its effects. To conduct their research, the scientists used male and female specimens of rats, exposed to situations where stress and then measured their levels of brain activity. Thus, a team led by Rita Valentino neurons found that females are more sensitive to the molecular signals emitted by a hormone called corticotropin releasing factor (CRF). This hormone, discovered in the eighties, is responsible for initiating the stress response.

Thus, by having more receptors for this substance, female neurons are more likely than men to react and trigger the stress process. Although the study was conducted in rodents, neuroscientist Rita Valentino, the lead author of the study, says that helps explain why women are twice as likely to suffer stress than men .

On the other hand, Valentino and his colleagues have discovered that, when subjected to chronic stress, males adjust their brain mechanisms for coping with stress more efficiently, reducing the number of CRF receptors, and therefore become less sensitive to hormone and more resistant to pressure situations. In female rats do not.
